Project 2

The aim of this project was to create an app that would use technology that's upcoming, and target an audience that has limited options.

I wanted to create an app that used AR (augmented reality) for navigational purposes out in the wilderness, whether that be bush, beaches, mountains, hillsides etc. Within this app, you could have the option to get information at certain points along a walk, therefor reducing the need for informative signs along popular walkways, which would reduce resources and help protect the environment.

But for an app to take off, the user has to have a good experience using the app, so I decided for the main objective, I would focus on learning how to design a good UI (user interface) and UX (user experience).

I researched a variety of stuff, such as the 25 principles of mobile app design, which gave me insight into thinking about what a user may want, I researched how people hold their phones, which showed me which areas of the screen I should prevent from button buttons because they were hard to reach for some users. I also looked into some well known designers, such as John Maeda, who said "Simplicity is about living life with more enjoyment and less pain", which got me thinking about designing a simple app that everyone can easily understand quickly.

Taking things out into the real world helped a lot with thinking about how to design my app too. I took 3 apps that are already on the market that use navigation and are based outside, and tested them, noting down what I liked, and what I didn't like, which helped me gage how far I wanted to push my app. I found to get a better sense of what my apps function would look like on a mobile screen, taking a 360 video of a short walk was great, because I could tell how my app might work, and how I would want the screen relatively untouched while a user was using it for navigation. I then took it one step further, using an app called Augment, to see how the app would work with an actual AR route on the screen.

This all came together in my app flowchart, which showed how the apps UI would look like and how the UX would work.
